A monumental mid-nineteenth century epic that charts, over the course of two films, a poor Swedish farming family's voyage to America and their efforts to put down roots in this beautiful but forbidding new world. Includes bonus disc with special features.

Originally produced as a motion picture in 1971; digitally restored by Svensk FIlmindustri in 2004.

Issued as part of a 3-disc set with: Utvandrarna (The emigrants) and a supplemental disc.

Supplemental disc includes: Introduction by theater and film critic John Simon, recorded for the Criterion Collection in October 2015; film scholar Peter Cowie interviews director, co-writer, cinematographer and editor Jan Troell, recorded for the Criterion Collection at Troell's home in Sweden in March 2015; and a Criterion Collection interview with Liv Ullmann, conducted in New York in October 2015. The disc also includes "To paint with pictures", a 57-minute documentary produced in 2005 by Svensk Filmindustri, detailing the making of The Emigrants and The new land, and includes archival footage as well as interviews with director Jan Troell, producer Bengt Forslund and actors Liv Ullmann and Eddie Axberg.
