I am in the holds queue, but none of my items are ready to be picked up yet. When will they be ready?

We are working to process your hold(s) as quickly as we can. Thousands of holds are made available every day at branch locations and many factors influence how and when we process holds. Factors contributing to prolonged wait time include:

  • Availability of item
  • Volume of holds placed.
  • Number of patrons ahead of you in the holds queue.
  • Transit time of material between GVPL branches.

Each branch location has a selection of popular materials to borrow on the spot. The virtual library features ebooks, e-audiobooks and streaming movies and music and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through GVPL.ca.

I need more time to pickup my holds. What can I do?

If you can’t get to the library within the five business days allotted to pick up your hold, you can contact us. Extensions may be possible. We’re here to help. Contact us by phone at 250-940-4875.

How do you pronounce sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ James Bay Branch?*

Pronounced s-hweng hw-ung tongue-oo-hw, sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ is the Lekwungen name of the First Nations territory now known as James Bay, on which this library is situated. The word sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ means “people who talk through their nose,” which is how the Lekwungen ancestors described the family group due to their accent.

There was strong support from the community during the Name That Library campaign to name the new branch a local First Nations name and to consult the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations on a suitable name. In consultation with the two local Nations, the name sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ James Bay Branch was selected.

Listen to the library name pronunciation by Songhees Nation Elder Dr. Elmer Seniemten George.

How do I pronounce sxʷiméɫəɫ təŋəxʷ (as seen on the sign for the Esquimalt Library Branch)?

The sign for the Esquimalt Branch library includes Lekwungen translation for the Esquimalt land territory. The phonetic spelling of the pronunciation sxʷiméɫəɫ təŋəxʷ is: s-hweye may-el tongue-oo-hw and means “Esquimalt land”.

Our libraries are air-conditioned and are cool spaces where everyone is welcome. However, it is important to note that our libraries are not designated as official cooling centres. For more information on extreme heat resources in Greater Victoria, visit: Local Emergency Program Websites.
