Somewhere in the abatis a grouse rooster was drumming. Henry had slowed his pace and listened attentively, absently searching the ground with the end of his umbrella converted into a walking stick. Joy is surely the condition of all life, he said to himself. Everywhere around him in the branches burst buds full of sap and resonated the nuptial songs of his winged brothers. In the midst of this explosion of vital forces Henry advanced. He thought about Alex again. Perhaps there were, in the humblest strata of humanity, far from the influence of literature and the arts, geniuses of another species, immersed in animal life and whose entire talent was to coincide with existence. Alex was an enigma. He was like the Walden Pond of popular belief: unfathomable. One fine morning in 1845, Henry David Thoreau took possession of the cabin he had built in Walden Pond, New England, to live away from the world. The book he drew from this experience, Walden or Life in the Woods, made him the precursor of the environmental movement, the ancestor of nature writing, the prophet of civil disobedience.
