These volunteer patients are both open and honest about their issues and feelings, lending a human face to psychiatric diagnosis.. Each of the 14 interviews was designed to illustrate clinical interviewing skills and how the updated criteria of the DSM-5 are interpreted to formulate different diagnoses, especially with disorders typically difficult to differentiate from one another.. The interviews were conducted by Northwestern University School of Medicine faculty and staff members who are internationally recognized leaders in diagnosing and treating psychiatric disorders. Interviewers from different mental health disciplines employing different interview styles are used as examples of how different approaches can be utilized to collect critical clinical information.. Each interview is followed by an interdisciplinary discussion to illustrate how different practitioners apply the updated DSM-5 to make a diagnosis and create an effective treatment plan. The interdisciplinary discussions also illustrate how different mental health disciplines are needed to develop a more complete clinical understand of different patients.. The interviews illustrate 12 different psychiatric disorders, organized into 4 diagnostically-themed groups: Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Psychotic Disorders and Disorders Associated with Medical Illness. In addition, a fifth group includes 2 psychiatric disorders which do not fit within the above groupings: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (A.D.H.D).
