Abstract:
Peal S. Buck won the Pulitzer Prize for her best selling novel, The Good Earth, which told the story of Chinese farmers who cultivated a bountiful and profitable harvest from their land. With that theme in mind this program confirms how great things come from the good earth, and a good environment. First we visit the Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy and meet owner Jim Schott, a former educator who left teaching to raise goats on his farm in Niwot, Colorado, and today his dairy is recognized as a producer of premium goat milk cheeses. We travel to the Whitetops in the White River National Forest to visit the Western Colorado Honey mountain bee farm to learn about honey making. We explore a quarry that provides some of the finest marble in the world and from employees of the Sierra Minerals Corporation learn about marble mining. We meet flutemaker Larry Spieler who carves handmade flutes that have been used by notables such as Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Mikaro and Carlos Nakai. We discover the art of growing sunflowers in Kit Carson County; then in the San Luis Valley we learn why bison ranching helps with land conservation.
