Hercule Poirot undertakes a sixteen-year-old murder case in which a woman apparently poisoned her adulterous husband. Because her husband-to-be is growing wearily disenchanted with her family's history, the daughter of the accused murderer, Carla Lemarchant, desperately tries to clear her mother's name. As Poirot conducts his investigation, he rounds up five other possible suspects.
