Bringing up the subject of death is difficult, as though the very mention of the word might call it down upon us. Yet discussing death is essential to preparing for it. Western medicine continues to see death as failure and often encourages treatment long past any life-enhancing benefits. Given the rapidly aging population in the U.S. and other Western nations, change is inevitable and will require new ways of thinking and speaking about death. The award-winning 3-part film series, Secrets of Life and Death is designed to provoke thought and dialogue on this taboo subject. The Secrets of Life and Death Series has been effectively used in universities, hospitals and hospices to encourage a deeper investigation of death and the opportunities it presents for social, organizational and personal evolution. Both compact and rich, this series of half-hour films provides educators with an impactful tool for examining social, psychological and spiritual elements of dying. Each film comes with its own discussion guide to give students in anthropology, nursing, psychology, sociology, social work and theology a deeper understanding of the key issues of death and living with dying. All three films in Secrets of Life and Death Series were official selections at the Western Psychological Association's annual film festivals. Facing Death . . . with open eyes won an Accolade Award and Caring for Dying: the art of being present was selected best documentary at the Poppy Jasper Film Festival. The Heart of Grieving was an official selection at the 2011 Poppy Jasper Festival and a finalist for the Women in Film and Television International Showcase. It was positively reviewed in Media Review Online (9/8/2011) and Booklist Online (2/28/11). Each film in the series conveys a different perspective of the dying experience -- facing death, caring for the dying and grieving the dead.
