Cornel Wilde is the good cop with a job to do: get the gangland kingpin behind bars where he belongs and get the gangster's girl for himself. Jean Wallace is the object of this bare-knuckle tug of war in the seamy underworld between her wily paramour, Richard Conte (Wilde's mortal enemy and sadistic crime boss) and the cop (Wilde) who gets the crap beat out of him by numerous thugs. There are a lot of picturesque people who populate this dark world and an oozing seediness to territory that's covered in this violent drama.
