Abstract:
Winter 1893. A physician named Mrs. Mellon arrives at a New York tenement to care for the aged, the indigent and the dying, and her patient in the garret fits all three categories, before she realizes she is in the presence of Maggie Fox, one of the infamous Fox Sisters. In their heyday, the Fox Sisters purported to communicate with ghosts and inspired the Spiritualist Movement, a quasi-religion complete with mediums and séances and millions of followers. Now Maggie is the only one left. Soon, with Mrs. Mellon's gentle prompting, Maggie is revealing her family's dark secrets. But is Mrs. Mellon her confessor and her saviour - or the last person upon whom Maggie is working her finely honed art? 2013.
