As the dark, threatening waves of the river engulf the small town of Perdido in southern Alabama, the Caskeys, a wealthy landowning family, must cope with the untold damage caused by the flood. Led by Mary-Love, the powerful matriarch, and by Oscar, her devoted son, the clan is about to rise again. But that's counting without the appearance, as sudden as it is mysterious, of Elinor Dammert, an attractive young woman with a troubled past, whose only intention seems to be to interfere in the heart of the Caskey family.
