Abstract:
Sleepy Hollow, a village in the town of Mount Pleasant, is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York. Here you will find the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, also known as the Dutch Reformed Church, which dates back to the 17th century. This National Historic Landmark and its three-acre churchyard were made famous by being feature prominently in Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; this burying ground is, as legend tells, where the Headless Horseman began his famous journey; it too is the final resting place of actual citizens, who it is believed inspired the characters of Katrina Van Tassel, Brom Bones, and others in the story. Nearby is the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where a number of famous people are buried, including Washington Irving and the famous industrialist and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. Here we explore and pay tribute to these important historical grounds, while also the program underscores the message of respecting cemeteries in general.
