Abstract:
Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a treatable condition marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and behavior. It is called bipolar disorder because a person's mood can alternate between the "poles" of mania (high, elevated mood) and depression (low, depressed mood). These changes in mood ("mood swings") can last for hours, days, weeks or even months. There are two main types of bipolar disorder: people experiencing Bipolar I may have more frequent episodes of mania; whilst those with Bipolar II experience more frequent episodes of depression. This 'Speaking from Experience' program offers first-hand accounts from people living with Bipolar disorder. They discuss the ways it has impacted their lives and how they manage the condition. It was produced in partnership with the Mental Health Association of San Francisco..
