Atiku utei, “the heart of the caribou”, is the strength of a people and their great humility. The Innu have walked through the storms of life. They crossed mountains to feed on the spirit of the caribou. They drew their strength, their courage, their knowledge from him. To the sound of the drum, the call of the forest sharpens the instinct. The poet in the heart of the caribou hears the voice of Madiba, Nelson Mandela. She hears the drums springing and their sound resembles those of her people. She, her heart, is peace and this dust which lifts the sky to infinity. She plunges into the river of poems, free sands and snows. Man brother grandfather Madiba's voice speaks to her. Atiku utei invokes the healing power of the heart. The word freedom does not exist in Innu-aimun. The caribou is freedom.
