Abstract:
"Indigenous people used plants and minerals to get colour for their art. Métis Michif artist Amanda Strong and Bracken Corbett Hanuse from the Wuikinuxv and Klahoose Nations help the kids plan and create a mural, using symmetry, perspective and colour. Artist Dionne Paul from the Sechelt and Nuxalk Nations creates traditional and contemporary art pieces by spinning, dying and weaving cedar and mountain goat wool. She also paints, sculpts, and makes regalia, moccasins, and drums, gathering natural materials for pigments to make dyes. Cedar is sacred to her people and used for many things. Comic book artist Sonny Assu paints designs on drums, and reclaims colonial landscape art, by scanning and tagging them with 3D shapes on his computer. An animated story describes an artist who learned about colour and earth science from an elder who gathered plants for her art. Cree hoop dance artist James Jones performs one of his famous works, and Kai’s mom shows us how to make a dream catcher."-- publisher's web site.
